I had to be downtown for other purposes, but while there I decided I wanted to make a photograph of the Arch that no-one had ever taken. Since the Arch is likely the most photographed scene in St. Louis with millions of images of it having been taken, I thought this would be a nice challenge for myself. I’ve yet to meet anyone who says they have seen another like mine. How I did it? At first, I wanted to show a view of the Arch from under the ground. So I placed a piece of black tinted glass on the ground up against the foot of the Arch. Black tinted so I would only get one reflection, not one from each side. By standing over the glass with my camera, the reflection would show the view as though from below ground. When I looked over my resulting images, I realized that this abstract view was better than what I originally had in mind, so that’s the one I chose showing both the foot of the Arch and it’s reflection as viewed from under ground. Hence, an abstract view of the Arch. My son pointed out to me that it works well in any orientation, but has a different feeling in each.
